The Latest Story Fall is fast approaching in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The katydids are sounding more like a whisper than a shout. The pear trees, those first to show a change in tint, are preparing us for God’s grand display of color. Laurie has been visiting her mom in California but will be home in a few days. The church garden is all plowed under, evenings are a little cooler, and we’ve laid up a good supply of blackberries, blueberries, and peaches for winter. God has been so good to us both.

Laurie and I both are looking forward to our twenty-third anniversary this November. We have talked about getting away to celebrate the occasion but, quite honestly, it’s getting harder and harder to find any place more beautiful or peaceful than our home in the Smokey Mountains. Please think about stopping by for a visit and we’ll put on some hot cider or hot chocolate and take out some of those frozen berries for a cobbler.

Visitors It was nice to have family visit with us this summer. We had a great time with Kim, Steve, and the kids. Here they are at Triple Falls, a favorite place to hike or go for a swim. The girls also got to visit the Biltmore Estate, Rick and Steve did some kayaking, and all of the kids made it to Orchard Lakes for some swimming, boating, and flying down the zip line. We even managed to have a backyard BBQ with Rob and Alec, Lynn and her daughter, and Caroline and the boys.

Catering provided by Dolly's Ice Cream, Moose Cafe, Hawg Wild, and Aunt Laurie's kitchen.

A Dog's Life
Boomer, like our squirrels, is putting on some weight to see him through winter. Bentley is trying to sharpen his hunting skills by snatching up any helpless flying insect that crosses his path. Thankfully, the white squirrels are safe from both. I’m a little embarrassed for them; the squirrels won’t even show them the respect of scampering up the trees when they go out anymore.

They both are getting better at taking naps with any human in the house, at any time of the day, so long as you’re willing to share a pillow. Laurie is trying her best to make them true Southern gentlemen and they are progressing quite well except for a few little areas like table manners, scratching in inappropriate places, barking out of turn, and public displays of affection.

Grandkids The video is Laurie and I with the grandkids at Sliding Rock and Looking Glass Falls. The still photo at the end is rafting on the Nantahala River. Yes, that's Laurie and I sliding with them.
